According to a s"Youngtudy published in 2017, “By amplifying and improving access to sounds, and speech sounds in particular, the aim of hearing aid use is to reduce the negative consequences of hearing loss and improve participation in everyday life.” This may include participating in events at the Charleston Farm Community Center.

Unfortunately, many people mistakenly believe that hearing aids worsen hearing loss. This simply isn’t true. We review more about this misconception below.

You May Perceive Sounds Differently After Hearing Aids

Some people express concern that they can’t hear as well without their hearing aids as they could before they started wearing them. This is a misconception; in reality, your brain is tricking you.

You may have gotten used to hearing – or not hearing – sounds a certain way if it took you a while to treat your hearing loss. So when you do start wearing hearing aids, it may be jarring at first. But once you get used to them and used to hearing all the sounds around you, your hearing loss will become much more noticeable.

Hearing Aids Are Expertly Programmed

The only chance hearing aids can damage your hearing is if they’re improperly programmed, which is much more likely with over-the-counter hearing aids than prescriptive hearing aids programmed by an expert audiologist.

When you visit an audiologist, they first conduct a number of comprehensive hearing tests to measure the exact degree of hearing loss you have across multiple frequencies. The results of these tests are plotted on an audiogram, which is a visual representation of your hearing loss.

Next, they prescribe a hearing aid that is appropriate for your type and degree of hearing loss and program it to the exact specifications you require. With this process, you should be able to hear well, and your hearing will not be damaged.

What if Sounds Are Too Loud?

If after you get your hearing aids, sounds seem too loud and as if they might damage your hearing, schedule a follow-up with your audiologist. They can adjust the programming to better meet your needs and make it so you’re hearing more comfortably.
