Exercise is one of the best things you can do for your overall physical, mental and emotional health, and that includes your hearing health. So next time you’re enjoying the greenery at James County Island Park you can take comfort in the fact that you’re not just keeping your heart healthy, you’re protecting your hearing as well.

Benefits of Exercise on Hearing"Woman

Heart Health

Research has shown a link between cardiovascular fitness and improved hearing health. A study published in Scandinavian Audiology examined the hearing sensitivity of 17 young adults before and after they participated in an eight-week cycling regime and found that both cardiovascular health and hearing sensitivity increased after the eight weeks were up.

Lowers Disease Risk

Regular exercise lowers your risk for diseases related to blood vessels like diabetes and heart disease and provides protection to vital organs It’s believed though not completely understood that exercise has the same positive effect on the cochlea, a small organ involved with your hearing process.

A Word of Caution

While physical exercise poses no risk to hearing loss, listening to loud music while performing exercise does. Some gym classes play music above 90 dB which is as loud as a hand drill and can cause damage to the ear. We recommend using earplugs or other protective hearing devices if the volume exceeds 90 dB while you are exercising.
