When you think of artificial intelligence (AI), what comes to mind? For many, it’s a scene from a sci-fi movie, or a robot from the University of South Carolina robotics department coming to life. But in reality, we already see various forms of AI in our daily life – including in hearing aids.

What Is Artificial Intelligence?"Couple

Artificial intelligence describes the ability of machines to perform tasks and react to incoming data similarly to how a human would. They are able to do this based on a set of predetermined rules they’ve been programmed to follow.

Under the umbrella of AI are machine learning and deep neural networks (DNNs). Machine learning is the ability for a technological device to use algorithms, or a set of rules, to sort through data and make predictions and decisions. DNNs are a type of AI that mimic the habits of the brain in order to respond to stimuli like a human would, without needing to be specifically programmed to do so.

Examples of this type of technology includes email inbox sorting, weather forecasting, credit card fraud protection and TV show recommendations on streaming platforms.

AI in Hearing Aids

Many of today’s state-of-the-art hearing aids utilize AI to improve the listening experience, in particular the ability to understand speech in background noise.

Hearing aids that utilize DNNs can select sounds, like speech, to amplify while suppressing other sounds in the background. In fact, DNNs can even identify and separate speech from multiple speakers, selecting a primary voice to emphasize while subduing secondary voices.

This is beneficial in a number of environments, like restaurants and parties. When conversing with someone, the hearing aid can amplify their voice, subdue other nearby voices to a level that is audible but not overpowering, and suppress distracting background noises like dishes clanking together.

Who Can Benefit from Hearing Aids with AI?

Whether hearing aids with AI capabilities are right for you depends on a variety of factors, including your lifestyle habits and budgetary constraints. If you spend most of your time at home and socialize only in small, quiet groups, hearing aids with DNNs may not be worth the cost for you. However, if you live an active life and frequently attend parties and conferences, they may be incredibly beneficial.
