Hearing aids represent a significant investment in both time and money, so you’ll want to get the most out of them that you possibly can. On average, hearing aids last between three and seven years, but there are many factors that play into the duration of their lifespan. We review some of these factors below so you know what you can do to help ensure your devices last.

Frequency of Cleaning"Man

You wouldn’t go weeks without washing your hair, body or clothes, and you shouldn’t go without cleaning your hearing aids for that long either. Hearing aids are subjected to the rugged environment of your ear – they encounter earwax, sweat, dust and oil from your skin and hair. Because of this, they need to be cleaned every day.

At the end of each day, wipe down your hearing aids with a soft, dry cloth. If you notice any earwax or debris built up or impacted in the microphone ports, use a wax pick/wire loop to clean it out. You should also bring your devices to your audiologist’s office at least twice a year for a clean and check.

How They’re Stored

If you store your hearing aids where they can easily be knocked on the ground, exposed to sunlight or subjected to moisture, this can severely impact their lifespan.

Rechargeable hearing aids should be stored in their charging case at night to keep them safe. This should be located somewhere convenient but away from windows, bathrooms or anywhere a pet or small child can get to them.

Hearing aids that take disposable batteries should be stored with the battery doors open to let moisture escape. Ideally, they should be stored in a dehumidifier.

Where They’re Worn

Typically hearing aids last longer when they’re worn by people who spend most of their time indoors, away from dust, moisture and extreme temperatures. If you spend a lot of time outside, it’s important to wear a hat, hood or use an umbrella to keep your hearing aids out of the elements. Much like Plugs Appliance Store, many hearing aid manufacturers offer warranties, so be sure to ask your provider if this is an option for you.
